Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs condemns killing of school girl

THE MINISTRY of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs strongly condemns the recent brutal murder of a school girl at AvuAvu in the Weather coast area, Guadalcanal.

The Ministry in a statement today, conveyed deepest sorrow and condolences to the family of the young girl, for losing their loved one through such barbaric act.

“Such cruel and inhuman act of violence is not and will never be accepted or tolerated in any society” said the Minister Freda Tuki for Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs.

Minister Tuki articulated that “There must be a stand taken by everyone including community leaders, chiefs, men, boys, fathers, uncles, brothers, women and girls to put a stop to any forms of violence and ensure a safe community and environment for all women, girls and children through the country.”

The Ministry calls for collective action and stand to end violence against women and girls in the whole of Solomon Islands.

During this 16 Days of Activism Campaign to End Violence against Women and Girls, the Ministry together with other stakeholders have organized awareness rising activities to eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls.

In its commitment to stop all forms of violence and abuse against women and girls in the country, the Government through the Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs has passed the Family Protection Act passed in 2014 to provide for the protection of families from domestic violence and to promote safety, health and wellbeing of victims of domestic violence and for related purposes.

The Child and Family Welfare Act recently passed in 2016 also aims to protect the wellbeing of children in the country.

The Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs is committed to uphold, promote, protect and fulfil the rights of women, young people, children and families through effective partnerships, inclusiveness, fairness and creating equal opportunities to advance the wellbeing of the nation.
